Science Camp 2009 Print E-mail

Po Leung Kuk (PLK) Laws Foundation College (LFC) and PLK Luk Hing Too Primary School (LHT) jointly organized a 3-day Science Camp for primary 4-6 students from LHT on August 4, 5 and 7, 2009.  The Science Camp aimed to provide LHT’s students with more training on scientific literacy.  Most importantly, in the science camp, LHT’s students experienced how to be a scientist.

Three LHT’s students were discussing their results of bacterial culture.

It is believed that students from primary schools should receive structural training in science.  LHT has established a school-based science curriculum to let primary school students explore science and enjoy the interest of science.  As LHT and LFC are a through-train school, they jointly organized Science Camp to provide LHT’s students with a chance to learn advanced science and conduct investigation in a standard laboratory.  It is known that LFC has a well-established biotechnology laboratory to conduct scientific research related to cell biology and molecular biology.

In the Science Camp, the students can learn the subject matter and research procedures in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  The Science Camp was structured as a 3-day programme.  Students in each subject will conduct an investigatory project.  The details of the lesson schedule is as follows:

In Biology lessons, through investigating the presence of bacteria in a kitchen, LHT’s students learnt the characteristics of bacteria, the methods to culture bacteria and strategies to kill bacteria.  [Click to read the lesson materials of the Biology lessons]

In Chemistry lessons, LHT’s students did a project to produce a “rainbow” series of acids and alkalis.  Through this project, the students learnt the properties of acids and alkalis and some basic techniques about mixing chemicals. [Click to read the lesson materials of the Chemistry lessons 1  2  3]

In Physics lessons, LHT’s students studied how to make a telescope by applying the knowledge about light.  Through this project, the students knew some basic properties of light. [Click to read the lesson materials of the Physics lessons]

At the end of the Science Camp, nearly all students commented that they enjoyed the Science Camp.  Most importantly, they indicated that their interest in science was promoted after the Science Camp.  It is so happy to join the Science Camp.  Won’t you (LHT’s students) join us next year?
