The 45th Annual Meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (Neuroscience 2015)

(Chicago, IL, U.S.A.)

On October 16-23, 2015, Dr. Suen Ka Chun, Dr. Tang Wing Suen and six Neuroscience Club students who are Chow Pak Chun (6J), Hung Ying Chin (6J), Ma Ho Him (6J), Hau Pak Chuen (5J), Shi Pok Lai (5J) and Chau Wai Hin (5V) attended the 45th Annual Meeting of Society for Neuroscience (SfN) and presented their research paper titled “Differential effects of seed extracts of citrus fruits against hydrogen peroxide-induced toxicity in SH-SY5Y cells” [abstract]. This was a collaborative project with the research group of Dr. Raymond C.C. Chang, Associate Professor, School of Biomedical Science, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam, Hong Kong, China.

In the same conference, Dr. Suen Ka Chun and Dr. Tang Wing Suen presented their educational research paper titled “Evaluation of five learning activities associated with live-cell imaging microscopy in a high school neuroscience curriculum for scientifically gifted students” [abstract].

Oct 16, 2015 (Friday)

They were going to take the flight to Chicago, IL, USA.

After the 14-hour flight, they arrived at the Chicago O'Hare International Airport.

Oct 17, 2015 (Saturday)

In the morning, they visited Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago.

In the afternoon, they visited Northwestern University.

At 5:15 p.m., they moved to the McCormick Place to attend the 1st Presidential Lecture of the 45th Annual Meeting of Society for Neuroscience.  The title of the talk was “Themes and Variations in Circuits and Behavior” by Dr. Cori Bargmann, PhD. In detail, the talk was about the studies of C. elegans behaviors.

Oct 18, 2015 (Sunday)

This morning, Dr. Suen Ka Chun and Dr. Tang Wing Suen were going to present their educational poster. Our students were very helpful to set up the poster.

Dr. Raymond Chang (Third Right), Associate Professor, School of Biomedical Science, LKS Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong supported our students and teachers.

At 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Dr. Suen and Dr. Tang led the students to attend a number of symposiums and lectures about social fear learning, reward prediction and reinforcement, anxiety and learning, investment game on treatment of Parkinson’s disease, autism and mental disorders. In a topic about video gaming and working memory, Chau Wai Hin (5V) asked a question about the methodology of the experiments done by scientists (shown by the photo below).

After lunch, they visited the exhibition of biotechnology companies in the conference centre.  Students can know the most advanced equipment in scientific research. The photo below shows Dr. Suen, Shi Pok Lai (Second Left) and Hung Ying Chin (First Right) participating in a “brain” competition.

At 5:15 p.m., they attended the Presidential Lecture titled “The Molecular Logic of Neural Circuits: Implications for Autism and Schizophrenia” by Dr. Thomas C. Sudhof, MD.

Oct 19, 2015 (Monday)

In Chicago, there are many museums. On Oct 19, our students visited Museum of Science And Industry.

Students entered the U-505 Submarine.

In the afternoon, they visited The University of Chicago.

They walked to visit different departments in the university campus:

Oct 20, 2015 (Tuesday)

In the morning, our young neuroscientists attended a special lecture titled “Strange Synapses and Circuits of the Basal Ganglia”.

Dr. Suen raised some questions about a study of “ Traumatic brain injury ”.

In the afternoon, the students visited Field Museum. In this museum, in addition to specimens of animals, insects and plants, mummies in ancient Egypt can be found.

Then, these young neuroscientists moved to The Adler Planetarium. In this museum, astronomy is the main focus.

At night, there was a final rehearsal for tomorrow’s presentation in the international conference of SfN.

Oct 21, 2015 (Wednesday)

This was the most important day in this conference trip. Our young neuroscientists were presenting their research about drug discovery. Many other neuroscientists were interested in their study.

Oct 22, 2015 (Thursday)

The team took a 15-hour flight from Chicago to Hong Kong, indicating the end of this conference trip.

We hope that more and more students gifted in science will be nurtured in our school. We will try our best to develop their potentials.
