The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is a nonprofit membership organization of scientists and physicians who study the brain and nervous system.  The SfN headquarter is located in Washington DC.  Each year, SfN organizes an annual meeting in U.S.A. so that all neuroscientists from different countries and cities can share their scientific findings among each other.

In 2006, our students from school’s Neuroscience Club did two researches. They were titled Doing physical exercise has no indication on learning and memory enhancement in children aged 13-15” and “Increment of sleeping time does not implicate enhancement on memory and learning in adolescents.  We were pleased that these two reports were accepted by SfN.  Seven of the students (Sum Chu Man (3S), Wong Chun Hei (3S), Chan Weng Hong (3V), Ho Hon Leung (3V), Ma Ka Him (3V), So Cheuk Yiu (3V) and Sy Lok Him (3V)) therefore went to Atlanta, GA, U.S.A. to present their research findings on October 13-21, 2006.  The details of this conference trip can be found in our school publication “Forever Young” [2nd Issue October, 2006].

In 2008, our new batch of Neuroscience Club students did another research titled “Immediate night-time sleep helps memory consolidation in adolescents aged 13-14”.  Again, this research report was accepted by SfN in June, 2008.  To present the research findings, Yuen Chun Ting (3S), Wong Yat Hei (3N), Lam Ho Cheung (3M), Lo Chun Yin Bernard (3J) and Li Lok Man (3V) joined the 38th annual meeting of the SfN in Washington DC, U.S.A. on November 14-21, 2008. In 2010, Neuroscience Club’s students further studied the mechanism of memory formation.  This research titled “Elicitation of a pungent sensation does not implicate memory modulation in adolescents aged 14-16” was accepted by SfN as a poster presentation paper in Neuroscience 2010.  Five students (Wong Yat Hei (5M), Yuen Chun Ting (5J), Lam Ngo Hung (5J), Ho Ho Yin (4M) and Lau Sin Pang (5J)) travelled to San Diego, CA, U.S.A. to present their research findings on November 13-19, 2010. Dr. Ka-Chun Suen is the supervisor for the above research projects.  He got the Neuroscientist-Teacher Partner Travel Award from SfN in 2006 [photo].  Besides, Dr. Suen actively does researches in neuroscience education.  In 2007, his research titled “Research-Based learning associated with an authentic topic can promote active learning in high school neuroscience lessons” was accepted by SfN.  In 2008, he went to Washington DC to present a topic titled “Brain cell culture is an effective learning activity for high school students to acquire diverse knowledge and skills about neuroscience”.  In 2010, he presented the paper titled “Development of a school-based neuroscience curriculum in a high school in Hong Kong” in the 40th Annual Meeting of SfN held in San Diego, CA, U.S.A..
